DAA's Wellness Fund

Studies show that eating cleaner and getting exercise boosts brain power, helps eliminate stress, and generally makes for happier, healthier human beings. So it is no surprise that this is something we value and promote at Detroit Achievement Academy.

We have high expectations for our students, so we make sure to fill their brains and bodies with the very best. When you ask our students what being healthy at DAA looks like, most would say it means all of our food has 5 grams of sugar or less, and that they get recess and art every day. Some of them might even mention their latest yoga and meditation practice. But what most people do not know is that our adults also uphold the healthy DAA standards.

Staff at DAA benefit from a "wellness" stipend, a fund that encourages healthy minds and bodies outside of school. And the adults have been super creative in how they use their stipend! Some are learning tricks and body bending in circus class, or buying rollerblades and rollerblading up and down the Detroit river walk, and others are putting it toward childbirth and yoga classes, a voodle spiralizer, or a treadmill to train for a marathon. DAA teachers and administrators are always busy bettering themselves outside of the school building so they can be their very best with students!
