Kids Explore Japan!

This year, we are fortunate to have the Kids Explore Japan. The primary objective is to introduce Japanese language and culture to children to assist in broadening their horizons while expanding their minds. The program has been in existence since 2013 but In 2016 the program became incorporated. Initial Tracee Sensei started off as a tutor, offering Japanese for free for a non profit organization. Tracee Sensei found joy in teaching children in the Detroit Japanese which birthed the Kids explore Japan, which has since developed into Global Kids Explore LLC.

Many students came in with little to no experience with the Japanese language and culture for the last 10 weeks, students have begun to immerse themselves with the Japanese culture. During this time students have learned how to properly greet one another, count to ten, colors, learn a few phrases and introduce themselves. What’s been the most fascinating for me, is watching and hearing students catch on so quickly. The students have become excellent note takers, auditory learners and are constantly improving their character writing skills.

In this video linked here, you’ll find two of our founding students introducing themselves and then sharing their age. Students get multiple opportunities to practice with the whole group, individually and with a partner. Even in this clip, you may overhear both Tracee and Stephanie Sensei assisting students with pronunciation, encouraging words and reminders of phrases. Students have been so good about persevering while learning such a difficult language.

Tracee and Stephanie Sensei have been incredible instructors making students excited about learning, exploring and understanding Japanese customs. What I love most about this elective is how the interdisciplinary content is very engaging. Watching students learn about geography, history, statistics and culture while learning the mechanics of the Japanese language has been incredible. Through the program, students are able to practice the language both verbally and in writing. Stephanie Sensei, is so patient with us as we stumble with learning the Japanese characters and sounds. I am so impressed with what our students have learned in such a short amount of time.
