Staying Productive During the Summer
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (2007), children do best when routines are regular, predictable, and consistent. So, although the school year is over, it is still important to implement a routine during the summer months. This will allow students to predict what is happening next and will help younger students understand the concept of before and after. Routines can run smoothly with proper planning, such as putting as many things in order as possible the night before, making sure the student comes home with/to a responsible adult (if attending latch-key or participating in other extra-curricular activities), and having bedtime rituals at the same time each night such as all electronics off, bath-time, brushing teeth time, storytelling, reading aloud, conversation, or bedtime songs.
In addition, it is also important for students to continue learning during the summer. Students who fall behind over the summer are less likely to graduate from high school or go on to college (National Summer Learning Association, 2003). Therefore, I have provided a link below to some awesome camps in the Metro Detroit area that will provide your student(s) with great experiences through STEM, creative arts, nature exploration, sports, and much more.

The summer time is also a great time for students to show a sense of responsibility by working to earn their own money. Working with others at an early age can enhance a teen's interpersonal skills, as well as prepare them for their future career. Obtaining a job can also teach them the importance of money management, along with a host of other values that correlate with having a job. Younger students can also have small chores around the house to earn allowance and they can spend time volunteering over the summer. Volunteering will provide them with a sense of purpose, a sense of community, and will also increase their social skills. I have provided links below to summer job programs, as well as volunteer opportunities. Have a safe and productive summer!
