Reading Month!

Wow! Another Reading Month has come and gone and there was so much joy around reading and sharing our love of reading with others. March is always a busy month, but at DAA we pack in the reading fun, even with Spring Break shaving a week off of our time to celebrate reading.

We had multiple chances throughout the month for students and families to share their love of reading. In my classroom, I invited family members to come in and be our “Mystery Reader” sharing a story of their choice with the students. We had three mystery readers who shared different stories with our youngest readers. Thank you to Mrs. Rogers, Ms. White and Ms. Liz for coming in to read to us! We also are lucky to have a student author, Savannah, who came to read her story to fellow first grade students and kindergarteners.

At DAA, we love a chance to have our crews come together across grade levels. This led to us reading each Monday at Community Crew, starting our week off with some quiet reading. As a bookworm, it is magical to hear the sound of over 300 kids reading at the same time. We also had a buddy reading time where crews paired up and each student brought a book to read with another student. Kindergarten A Crew was with third grade students, and it was so sweet to watch siblings, cousins, and new friends read together.

“We ended the month with a fan favorite day, Book Character Day.

Finally, we ended the month with a fan favorite day, Book Character Day. Personally, I think that the staff was more into this than the students. It felt like teacher Halloween to me! We did have friends of all ages dress up and participate in our parade down the K-3 hallway to show off their costumes and book characters they love. Check out our adults as: Miss Nelson/Viola Swamp, a purple crayon from “The Day the Crayons Quit,” Sherlock Holmes, Dorothy, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion, Alice and Arthur, DW and more! We also had some students dress up as Hogwarts students, Katie the Catsitter, a glamorous Mary from Mary Had a Little Glam, Sonic and a character from the Descendants series.
