6th Graders Take a Trip Around the World

Imagine going on an African safari.  There you will see the most majestic African elephants, beautiful spotted cheetahs, royal and courageous lions, zebras, rhinos, and many other amazing creatures, including a diversity of birds.

Maybe you’d rather see a plush greenery landscape composed of a large diversity of exotic plants.  You can find this as well as many beautiful waterfalls and eye-catching colorful birds in the tropical rainforest.

Perhaps you’d like to camp outside, do some fishing and view wildlife as it passes you by in places such as the tundra and deciduous forests.

This year 6th grade learned about the different biomes of the world and got to experience many of these places without even leaving the classroom. Students were introduced to the world’s biomes through readings, slideshow presentations, and videos. After a couple of weeks of learning about biomes students selected their favorite biome and researched it.

After researching their chosen biomes students then recreated their biomes in boxes. Students used their newly learned knowledge of biomes, their creativity, and crafts to create biomes ranging from the tundra to the dessert. Once students created their biomes in a box they presented their project to the class and told us about what parts of the earth that their biomes can be found, the types of plants and animals that live there, the landscape of their biome, and the climate of their biomes. They also informed the class about the eating habits of the animals that live in their biome by identifying which animals are carnivores (meat eaters), omnivores (eating both plants and animals), and herbivores (plant eaters).

6th grade (and myself) really enjoyed “taking a trip around the world” to view all of the different landscapes, plants, and animals of each biome. Maybe next year, we will take a trip to outer space.
