Fitness Class at DAA

Physical activity is of utmost importance for elementary students at Detroit Achievement. Engaging in regular exercise not only promotes physical fitness but also plays a crucial role in the overall development and well-being of young learners. Physical activity helps improve their cardiovascular health, enhances muscular strength and coordination, boosts cognitive functions, and fosters social interaction and teamwork skills. At Detroit Achievement, students participated in a wide range of activities throughout the year to reap these benefits.

To start each session, the students begin with a warm-up routine that includes stretching exercises to prepare their bodies for physical exertion and prevent injuries. They learned the importance of a proper cool-down as well, which involves activities like light jogging and stretching to gradually bring their heart rate back to normal and help their muscles recover. We also conducted fitness performance tests, such as the pace test, jumping, and throwing, which assess the students' agility, power, and coordination. The students were taught about the distinction between dynamic and static stretching. They learned that dynamic stretching involves active movements that mimic the motions of the activities they will engage in, while static stretching involves holding a stretch for a period of time. By understanding this difference, they can apply the appropriate stretching techniques before and after physical activities to prevent injuries and enhance their performance.

Throughout the year, we exposed the students to a variety of sports and activities. They had the opportunity to learn and play tennis, soccer, track and field, basketball, and kickball, which led students to participate in After-School sports directed by my youth sports organization Embrace Sportz. These activities not only provide them with a chance to improve their physical fitness but also develop skills such as hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship. By participating in a diverse range of activities, the students at Detroit Achievement gained a well-rounded understanding of the importance of physical activity and developed lifelong habits for a healthy and active lifestyle.
